Mangakaraa Project

Pest Control on Mt Pirongia

Beginning in 2006 a bait station grid was set up on Mt Pirongia, initially with 250ha near the end of Grey Rd, Te Pahu and eventually covering 1,000ha.

Stretching across the northeastern face of the maunga between Sainsbury Rd and Corcoran Rd, the grid is serviced by community volunteers over the spring to protect nesting birds from rats and possums.

The toxin used at present is the anti-coagulant, pindone.
