Robins / Pītoitoi

Bringing back the lost birds

Following the successful pest control in the Mangakaraa we became eligible to translocate robins, a bird which requires a fairly small territory. We had established sufficient predator controlled safe area.

The translocation took place in two waves in 2012-13. Birds were captured from Mangatutu ecological area in northern Pureora. Funding for the project was provided by Waipa District Council and 70 volunteers were involved.

Pītoitoi robins are now breeding successfully on Mt Pirongia which we know from sightings of unbanded birds. Bird monitoring is carried out annually to assess the health of the population.
